How to Resolve Things When You Are On Your Own

The key to most dispute resolution is changing the way people communicate. Here are suggestions that can help you manage a difficult conversation toward resolutions that will last.

• Talk directly.
• Choose a good time and place.
• Think about what you want to say ahead of time.
• Don’t blame or name call.
• Share experiences first; interpret, together, after.
• Share all relevant information.
• Don’t interpret the each other’s behavior; listen first.
• Talk it through.
• Work together to find solutions.
• Follow through.

Our experience has taught us that these simple suggestions work. For more about these suggestions and about other conflict management techniques click to other resources in the Learning Center of this website.
