Why do some natural
resource professionals get more done than others? What are the hard parts
of a career that you might encounter? Mike teaches people how to create
careers of meaning, purpose, and achievement.
There
is a real difference between the work environment of a professional in the private sector and a professional responsible for the public's natural resources. Because the
natural resource professional's working environment is so different career
management skills should be different as well. So far, the narrators for
Intelligent Courage have identified eight career issues ("Keystone
Issues") that all professionals encounter but only effective professionals
are able to manage.
Understanding these Keystone Issues positions a
professional to:
●
devise solutions for their own career,
●
become a sensitive and supportive supervisor, and
●
effectively mentor the next generation of natural resource
professionals.
Mike gives keynote
speeches, workshops, and a student colloquium on
Intelligent Courage.
In these sessions we examine the dilemmas and look at ways to improve career
effectiveness.
Colloquium
for students:
This colloquium is a workshop to explore the ways professionals create
careers that make a difference. Interview results from
Intelligent Courage
are combined with audience participation. In so doing we explore some of the dilemmas and
opportunities that natural resource professionals routinely face. We
examine how to consciously choose a purpose for your career.
Workshops for
professionals:
This interactive
workshop begins with a presentation on the main career themes the narrators talk
about in Intelligent Courage. Mike
then facilitates a discussion of the career events that audience members
have encountered. After diagnosing the problems and opportunities these
events present we problem solve around the audience's specific issues. Mike also offers advice from his
consulting practice working with agencies and professionals across the
nation.
Keynote
Speeches:
Intelligent Courage
contains the career stories of truly inspiring natural resource
professionals. These folks have:
●
shown courage in difficult situations,
● compassion in making tough
decisions,
● innovation in the face of
pressure to preserve a dysfunctional status quo, and
● leadership when incentive
systems rewarded timidity.
Above all,
their careers taught them a lot. They accumulated
considerable wisdom about how to be an effective natural resource
professional. In speaking engagements Mike tells their inspiring stories and
summarizes the attributes that made them exceptional professionals.
